Sweden and Finland have allowed the deployment of nuclear weapons near the borders with Russia if they become members of NATO. This is reported by Bloomberg.
Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said that Helsinki should not set preconditions for membership in the alliance. According to her, this issue is almost not discussed in the country, as the authorities are waiting for the ratification of Finnish membership by Turkey and Hungary.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also agreed with her. “It is very natural that Finland and Sweden act together on these issues and have the same design,” he said. According to him, the Scandinavian countries should take into account all the conditions of NATO.
In addition, the Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces, Mikael Buden, recommended refraining from any reservations regarding cooperation on nuclear weapons. In his opinion, drawing red lines before joining the alliance will create additional obstacles and friction.
Earlier it became known that the Finnish government has prepared a law under which it is supposed to allow the deployment of nuclear weapons when joining the alliance. It is noted that the document will soon be submitted for consideration by the parliament.
