Network bridges play a crucial role in connecting multiple network segments, allowing devices on different segments to communicate as if they were on the same network. A network bridge operates at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model, making decisions based on MAC addresses rather than IP addresses. By examining incoming data frames, a network bridge determines whether to forward or filter traffic, helping reduce network congestion and improving overall performance.

Unlike routers, which operate at Layer 3 and manage traffic between different networks, network bridges focus on linking similar networks, often within a local area network (LAN). They are particularly useful in extending the reach of a network without requiring complex configurations or additional IP addresses. Modern network bridges can be hardware devices, standalone units, or software-based solutions integrated into operating systems, providing flexible options for network design.

Network bridges also enhance network security by controlling traffic flow between segments. By selectively forwarding frames, bridges can isolate network traffic, preventing unnecessary data from reaching sensitive areas. Additionally, they help in segmenting large networks into smaller, more manageable sections, improving efficiency and reducing collisions in Ethernet networks.

With the evolution of networking, traditional network bridges have influenced the development of more advanced devices such as switches. However, understanding network bridges remains essential for network administrators, as the principles of traffic management and segmentation still apply in modern network architectures.
